May 1st has been celebrated
for more than a century as International Workers Day in countries around
the world, with a handful of exceptions, including the United States. However,
this year over
1.5 million people took part in May Day demonstrations throughout the country,
culminating in one of
the single largest days of protest in US history. The protests were called by
immigrant solidarity
groups as a national day of action against House Resolution 4437, which would
have criminalized
those assisting undocumented immigrants as "alien smugglers" and would
have changed an undocumented
status to a federal aggravated felony. Los Angeles, CA witnessed several massive
protests throughout
the day and an estimated 400,000 marched along the city's Wilshire Corridor
that evening.
